❄ On March 22 to 27, the International model of the Arctic Council MAC Iceland 2020 was held with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iceland. The event, officially timed to coincide with the meeting of Senior Arctic Officials as a youth section, was supposed to be held in Akureyri, Iceland, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic it was decided to hold all meetings in an online format. 🎓 The First Secretary of the MGIMO Arctic student research club Arsenii Kirgizov-Barskii took part in the conference.
🌎 Within the framework of the international model Arctic Council, participants from 11 countries focused on environmental issues, including plastics and protected areas, and the work of the Arctic Council Working Group— Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment (PAME)—and the Senior Arctic Officials (SAOs).
🔎 A. Kirizov-Barskii represented the Aleut Internaional Association (AIA), which is one of the 6 permanent participant organisations of the Arctic Council.
📚 According to the project's tradition, modelers had the opportunity to meet scientists and diplomats from a number of Arctic countries. Thus, the participants were given lectures by the SAO of Iceland Fredrik Jonsson, Nansen Professor of the Akureyri University Gunnar Rekvig, as well as the Economic/Commercial Officer of the US Embassy in Iceland Robert Gerber. Ongoing scientific support for the modelers was provided by the MAC 2020 project coordinators from the University of Akureyri, Professor Rachel L. Johnstone and international coordinator Gunnar Már Gunnarson, as well as University of Alaska Professor Brandon Boylan. On the last day of the event, participants were able to attend the Arctic Science Summit Week (ASAW) 2020 scientific conference, which was also organised in the online format. 📆 According to the plans of the MAC Thematic Network managers of UArctic and the University of Alaska, the next International model Arctic Council should be held in Russia as part of our country's chairmanship in the organization in 2021-2023. ❄ ❄ ❄ ❄ ❄
